Embryo Transfer

Over the past several years, there have been some developments in embryo transfer (ET) that have made the procedure more attractive to mare owners. One change is that most of the breed registries allow more than one foal to be registered per mare each year, and they can be from different stallions.

Another change is that several commercial embryo transfer companies retain large recipient mare herds. With the availability of successful shipping of cooled embryos, the embryo can be obtained here at our hospital and transferred to a mare in Oklahoma the same day!

Why consider embryo transfer?

  •   To obtain foals from older or injured broodmares that can no longer successfully carry a foal to full term.
  •  To obtain foals from mares currently being trained or shown.
  •  To obtain more than one foal per mare per year from the same or different stallions.

What are the success rates?

  •   Our embryo recovery rates at Anoka Equine have been approximately 50% per cycle.
  •  The pregnancy rates of recipient mares for embryos Anoka Equine shipped to commercial ET farms was approximately 32%

Clients can use their own mares for recipients, but success rates can be highly variable and require considerable veterinary management.

If you have questions about the Anoka Equine embryo transfer program and prices, please call the clinic and talk with Karina Slinger, our breeding manager, Dr. Kim Voller or Dr. Ingrid Borkoski.
