- Sometimes a busy show season or the desire to have more than one foal in a given year caused owners to look toward embryo transfers. Often an older mare, or a mare that cannot carry a pregnancy to term, is another reason for embryo transfer. The mare is bred with fresh, cooled or frozen semen, and then is monitored for the time of ovulation. Seven to eight days after ovulation the donor mare is flushed. When an embryo is retrieved, it is flown to a recipient mare at one of our select few, and well managed embryo recipient facilities. These herds are very large and use only the best reproductive mares as recipients. Once the recipient mare is checked pregnant with a fetal heartbeat, the recipient mare becomes yours for a year. This mare is shipped back to the donor mare’s owner to be foaled out.
