WHY DO WE DEWORM?

*Parasite: Large Strongyles/Blood Worms

Effects: Recurring colic, diarrhea, hepatitis and poor body condition.

Source: From manure; eggs survive winter on pasture. Adult worms live in large intestine.

 

*Parasite: Small Stronglyes

Effects: Diarrhea, anemia, recurrent colic, and poor body condition, Worms may develop resistance to certain dewormers.

Source: From manure. Eggs survive winter on pasture.

 

*Parasite: Ascarids/Roundworms

Effects: Primary Damage: impaction/fatal rupture of small intestine. Lung migration can produce respiratory disease; common cause of retarded growth & unthriftiness.

Source: From eggs in manure that survive winter on pasture.

 

*Parasite: Bots

Effects: Cause unthriftiness and gastritis.

Source: Eggs of bot fly laid in hair => licked by horse => hatch in mouth => create oral ulcers and larvae that attach to stomach lining.

 

*Parasite: Pinworms

Effects: Excessive tail rubbing, loss of condition, and irritability.

Source: Eggs in manure; eggs die quickly on pasture.

 

*Parasite: Tapeworms

Effects: Colic, marked digestive disturbances, unthriftiness.

Source: Eggs in manure; pasture mites as intermediate hosts. Worms cluster primarily in large intestine.

 

*Parasite: Threadworms  

Effects: Erode small intestine lining. Produce weight loss, anemia, diarrhea, & lack of appetite.

Source: Passed to foal via mare’s milk; possible contributing factor “foal heat” diarrhea.

 

*Parasite:Stomach Worms

Effects: Digestive disorders, summer sores, inflammation of stomach wall, & skin ulcers.
