Student Opportunities

Veterinary Internship Program

Anoka Equine is pleased to provide a structured and broad-based internship program that provides new graduate veterinarians with the opportunity to develop clinical and client interaction skills that will serve them well in a practice environment or a residency program. Our interns are exposed to diverse and challenging cases as well as everyday care, a variety of horse disciplines, and primary case management. Providing mentorship and practical hands-on experience are at the very core of the internship.

Interns are exposed to all facets of veterinary medicine, surgery, reproduction, anesthesia, and lameness. The first 2-3 months are divided into time spent assisting the veterinarians in the hospital and out in the field. Following that period, we feel our interns are able to start take on their own ambulatory calls during the day as well as emergency time on-call. Throughout the internship the interns are still partially scheduled in the clinic where they are able to participate in detailed lameness cases, surgery and intensive care cases.

Veterinary Student Externship Program

Anoka Equine offers externship positions to veterinary students throughout the year. Each day the students are scheduled to follow one of our practitioners on their daily routine and experience life as a veterinarian in the upper Midwest. Our externs have ample opportunity to come into hands-on contact with real life situations.

Successful applicants for our internship come from those who have spent time with us as externs. We do accept 1st  and 2nd year students as externs with preference in scheduling being given to 3rd and 4th years. Housing can also be arranged for students coming from out of state.

Job Shadow Opportunities

While we are open to any student wanting to complete a job shadow for the day, we do prefer you have some equine experience. This is a great opportunity to see what a “typical” day is like in equine veterinary medicine. This will be an observation only day and we encourage you to ask as many questions as you’d like. You will be able to watch procedures ranging from routine treatments to the unexpected surgery or emergency appointments. We offer job shadows Monday - Friday during normal business hours.

Internship Reviews

Zach Loppnow, DVM

2017-2018 Intern

"Having completed this internship in 2017-2018, I can honestly say that this is one of the top internship experiences across the entire industry. Every internship will give you ample opportunities to experience a variety of medical cases. Very few, offer you the chance to actually make the decisions on those cases. As I was looking for internship opportunities during my fourth year of veterinary school, I wanted to find an opportunity where I could learn, develop my personal brand of medicine, and understand exactly what it meant to be Dr. Loppnow. This internship provided all of that and so much more. You spend the first three months or so learning how the hospital operates, and getting to know the client base. During these months, the other doctors get a chance to know you as well, and become familiar with how you work and communicate. After this initial train in period, you are given a vehicle and get to gradually start seeing your own cases. The beauty of this internship is that you don't operate your cases under the direct supervision of an associate. Instead they are your cases, field and hospital, where you make the medical decisions, you develop treatment plans, and you communicate with owners each step of the way. This isn't to say you are on an island and everyone abandons you to a glut of emergency cases. Quite the contrary. The 7 other doctors in the practice (with a massive amount of experience and knowledge) are always there to back you up and step in if you have any problems. Each of your on call nights, you are paired with a secondary doctor who is simply there to back you up, and answer any questions if you call. This mentorship approach solidifies your medical approach and gives you a comfortable atmosphere where you can develop your brand of veterinary medicine, while also getting a feel for what it truly means to be an equine veterinarian. I sincerely believe that there is no better internship in the country to prepare you to become a general practitioner. From first rate facilities, to welcoming staff, elite technicians, and veterinarians who are eager to teach, Anoka Equine gave me the tools to succeed no matter where I ended up. I would strongly recommend this internship to anyone hoping to make a career out of equine medicine, general practice, residency, or academia, as it equips you to take on any challenge in the broad spectrum of equine veterinary medicine."
